How to complete Profile

Following are some ideas to bear in mind when completing your on-line Confidential profile on the TRS web-site.

Your Profile is only accessible to Registered Schools and is not passed on to any mailing lists or marketing companies.

Let schools find you.
By ticking the 'Let schools access my Confidential Profile” box in the 'Profile page', this will enable schools to view your Profile and contact you if they would like to find out more about you. The Confidential Profile is designed for you to be “on the market” without disclosing your personal details. You should not put any information into the Confidential Profile that identifies you unless you are comfortable to do so.
The process works like this
  • You complete the Confidential Profile
  • You tick the box, saying you would like your Profile to be accessible to schools
  • Schools can then search all profiles that match their needs
  • If they are interested in you, they will ask you (through TRS to maintain confidentiality) to apply for the job, or they may ask you to contact them to clarify some points
  • If you are interested in their job, you can then apply (either on-line or other). Only when you apply are your full details made available to the school – SO YOU IN CONTROL.

Notice period.
This is the amount of notice you are required to give for your current employer. This indicates to the school when you are likely to be able to start if you are offered the position.

Are you a qualified teacher?
Please choose the option which best suits your qualification status. Tick yes if you hold a teaching qualification from a tertiary institution, whether in NZ or overseas. A new graduate from a Teaching institution, who is still awaiting registration, should tick yes. If you are still studying, you should tick No.

Are you registered to work as a teacher in NZ?
To teach in NZ, a teacher must have obtained registration with the NZ Teachers Council. The Council issues a registration number upon completion of its assessment. Teachers Council registration can include:
  • Full registration
  • Provisional registration
  • Subject to Confirmation.
If you have any one of these categories then should tick Yes.
In all other cases you should tick No. If you are in the process of obtaining registration still tick No, but comment on this in the “Other Info” section

If a non-NZ resident, do you have a work permit?
Teachers from overseas must have a work permit to work in NZ. For teachers this is not difficult to obtain in many cases. If you do not have a work permit., tick No.

NZ residents do not answer this question

Nationality
Name the country for which you have a passport.

Preferences
You are asked to highlight in each box your preferences for seeking work in NZ – this is important as this is the basis for schools undertaking searches. When completing these sections, you can use the Ctrl key to make multiple choices within each section.

Preferred / Current teaching position.
Please state the position you would prefer to have and your current position. This will help to ensure that your CV can be viewed by schools searching TRS for teachers.

Subject / Other Specialism.
For secondary teacher, please indicate which are your top 2-3 subject specialisms. For non-secondary (primary and pre-school, select the appropriate general option.

Preferred Location.
Please indicate the areas that you would like to work in. If you are free to relocate or have no preference, then choose all locations using the Ctrl key. If you only wish to work within a specific region select this. This way only schools in that area will contact you.

Additional Info
this is the section where you can add any information not covered elsewhere – you can use this to provide status on qualifications (for nearly qualified candidates); immigration status (for overseas candidates) etc

Supporting Statement.
The Supporting Statement is the most important part of your Confidential Profile. This is the part that employers are most interested in reading. This section is for you to add information about yourself.

  • Explain why you are seeking new employment and/or what the reasons are for your next career move.
  • It is vital you outline your teaching experience clearly. You should outline the subjects you have been responsible for, and age ranges you have covered.
  • You may have had a management position within a department or school, co-ordinated short term projects or provided training for staff.
  • If you have organised or helped with extra curricular activities these should be referred to as well.
  • Outline your qualifications and educational achievements and any other relevant training you may have received. Include details of the institutes attended, details of the qualification achieved and (perhaps) the grades obtained.
  • Finally, you may wish to include your beliefs in teaching and classroom ethos.
  • If you are coming to teach in NZ from overseas, use the first line of your supporting statement to detail your travel plans.

Interests.
This should include information about hobbies you may have, sporting achievements and any other information you feel may be pertinent to teaching. For example you may be a scout leader or a first aider.
